` ~ (Page 3) •
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-77-493
INSPECTION -ATE 9/17198 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS ACS
shore. The culvert that carried the stream under this road has been removed, and
the stream is passed through a hay bale prior to flowing into the reservoir. There
is also a small flow of water down this spur road coming from the south. This spur
road is no longer useful, will be hand seeded in the fall of 1998.
The stream channel that flows into the reservoir's east end was followed up to the
east several hundred feet. This stream channel was observed to lead back to the
location of the Robinson Lake ground water cutoff wall. With the exception of the
spur road described previously, this drainage is essentially undisturbed and well-
vegetated all the way back to the ground water cutoff wall. If the ground water
cutoff wall is properly maintained and operated, and if the spur road is revegetated,
the inlet to the Eagle Park Reservoir at the east end should continue to provide good
quality water to the reservoir.
Based on the observations made during this inspection, and documented in the
preceding paragraphs, the Operator has satisfied the requirements of condition No.
3 to Revision SR-002.
Infestations of Yellow Toad Flax and Oxeye Daisy were observed in the drainage above
Eagle Park Reservoir. The overall weed situation at Climax was discussed. Based
on the Division's observations during inspections at the site over the past several
years, there are no severe weed infestations on the Climax property. The Operator
is concerned with the Yellow Toad Flax, Oxeye Daisy, and Canada Thistle that is
present, and has taken the initiative to explore and develop weed control strategies
for the site. The Operator is encouraged to contact local weed control offices in
the development of a control plan, and to report progress on weed control in the
annual reclamation report for the Climax Mine. A copy of the Weed Control Policy
adopted by the Mined Land Reclamation Board on 7/29/98 is being provided under
separate cover. Given the general absence of weeds at Climax and the Operator's
initiative to institute controls before the problem develops, the Division will not
require that a weed control plan be incorporated into the permit at this time.
The Eagle Park Reservoir outlet works were under construction at the time of this
inspection. It was observed that in order to obtain an undiluted sample of water
released from the reservoir, that the sampling point must be at the end of the pipe
exiting the dam face. It was also agreed that the sampling required under SR-002
would occur at the beginning, middle, and end of the primary reservoir release period
which coincides with snow making operations at downstream resorts, and that minor
releases during mid-winter to lower the reservoir for spring runoff would not, in
general, be sampled.
I & E Contact Address
cc: Carl Mount, DMG
^ CE
NAME Brvice Romig ^ BL
OPERATOR Climax Molybdenum Comnanv ^ FS
STREET Climax Mine ^ HW
CITY/STATE/ZIP Climax.
