MINE ID ~` OR PROSPECTING ID #
INSPECTION DATE 10-17-94
The No. 4 Crusher was inspected next.
was agreed that any mercury vapor 1
safety of the removal crew, would be
(Page 3)
M-77-493
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS ACS
This area is illuminated by mercury vapor 2ighta. It
fights that could be removed without jeopardizing the
taken out prior to relocation of the pump at at ion.
An electrical substation near No. 4 Crusher was visited next. The traneformere at this
substation are silicon packed and will be salvaged. The traneformere are labeled to be free
of PCB's.
The pump station and substation on 629 level was inspected. Some tools and solvents remain
at this location so that they will be available in the event that a pump needs to be rebuilt,
so this location will need a final sweep for potential contaminants prior to pump station
relocation.
A former substation location was inspected; removal of all electrical equipment was verified.
We climbed a ladderway in No. 4 Shaft to return to the 600 level. There is a large
counterweight, believed to be lead, submerged in No. 4 shaft (workings below the 629 level
were flooded previously). The operator will remove and salvage the counterweight.
Battery storage on 600 level near the No. 4 shaft was inspected and found be completely
cleaned-out. 6160 mobile prep and fuel storage were inspected. A diesel tank in the fuel
storage room has a small amount of fuel at the bottom of the tank that will have to be
removed. No other potential groundwater contaminants were observed.
South crosscut fuel storage was inspected and found to be cleaned out. The diesel tank that
remained was opened and found to be empty. 6140 drift mechanic's shop was inspected and no
potential contaminants were observed.
Based on this inspection there is a high degree of confidence that potential contaminants in
the form of PCB's or petroleum products have been removed from the mine. The operator
accommodated the Division by providing complete access to the 600 level, in fact, an oxygen
meter had to be retrieved to allow access to an area with the potential for bad air when I
requested to inspect the south crosscut fuel storage. once the final clean-out details,
documentation, and monitoring programs described in this report are completed or in place,
Climax may proceed with pump station relocation.
On a separate matter, the operator stated verbally their intent to comply with the condition
proposed by the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment regarding disposal
of wooden debris associated with Storks Yard building demolition. This condition reads:
All wooden materials be removed from the on-site disposal stream.
Untreated wood may be chipped and used as mulch, recycled through a
different process, or disposed of in an approved municipal solid waste
disposal facility.
This condition proposed by the Health Department is now incorporated as a condition of the
Division's acceptance of the proposed on-site disposal of Storks Yard debris.
cc: Carl Mount, DMG
Dori J.
