January 29, 1997

JAN 3 Q 199i
Mr. James C. Stevens
Division of Minerals and Geology _ .~ : ,,.,,,,~~gy
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Re: Costilla Landfill Pit (Permit M-80-233), Apparent failure to comply with permit, i.e.
groundwater monitoring requirements.
Dear Mr. Stevens:
This letter is in response to your correspondence of January 13, 1997 regarding the aforementioned
facility. Within this document (per previous reports from Greystone), the condition of wells MW2
and MW3 is reported as dry during the third and fourth quarter of 1996. Within your correspondence
the request is made for a remedial action plan that assures that water samples will be obtained during
the next quarterly sampling period. This activity is currently scheduled for March of this year.
In compliance with this request, Greystone proposes that the wells will be assessed in both February
and March to determine the presence of water in these wells. If water is available for sampling, then
these wells will be sampled. If water is not determined to be present, then an alternative course of
action will be determined. Please note that when water was available in these wells, concentrations
of constituents tested for were not substantially above the levels determined for the upgradient
(background) well.
Greystone appreciates the cooperation of the CDMG in this matter. Should you have any questions,
or require further information, please do not hesitate to contact me at (303)850-0930.
Sincerely,
~~l ~~,~
Marc E.
