Walther
Executive Director
Ronald W. Canany
Acting D/ivision Director
M-2000-113, Berm Construction Issue and Succession of
Thank You for taking the time to visit with staff at the above referenced site on March 5th,
2003. Lafarge is preparing to start up the Mamm Creek Pit and getting off on the right
foot is important for both the operator and the Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG).
Please find enclosed a copy of the courtesy inspection report to document the onsite
meeting.
A question arose as to the reference of a geo-membrane fabric being required for the river
barrier that will soon be constructed. Staff's review of the approved permit application
has produced the following observations:
1) The proposed use of the fabric is for berm stability, "if" suitable granular and
filtering materials were not present on site or otherwise available. A copy of the
design specification is to be submitted to this Office prior to construction of the
berm for staff review. It is staff's understanding that the operator has had some
discussions with the Corp of Engineers and they have no issues with construction
designs. Please submit a copy of the design as required when Lafarge determines
the best construction method for the berm.
The second issue discussed briefly was Lafarge's Succession of Operator (SOl for this site.
Please submit the proper documentation to the Denver Office of DMG for the transfer of
the permit to Lafarge by 3/31 /03. Roaring Forks Resources technically is responsible for
any disturbance on site until this transfer occurs. Additionally, a letter from Roaring Fork's
designating you as a permit contact person needs to be sent to this Office immediately so
that future correspondence can continue.
