RUSSELL
CORPORATE MANAGER -ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS
November 15, 1993
Mr Allen Sorenson
State of Colorado
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman St. Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Re: Bulldog inspection Report
Dear Allen,
• iii iuiiiiiiiiiiiii~
999
~J
~~~ 18 1983
~';:;~.
~•. ~, .
Further to our discussions this letter responds to the
observations made in the recent inspection at the Bulldog Mine in
Mineral County, Colorado (inspection report received September 30,
1993).
Vent Raise
The vent shaft was closed per our description in the field
during the site inspection. Unfortunately, we had completed the
vent closure prior to receiving your inspection report and no
pictures were taken during closure activities.
Lower Tailincxs
The lower tailings breach slopes were permitted to be 1.5:1 as
constructed during your site inspection. The area had been seeded
and germination and plant emergence was occurring shortly after
your inspection. However, to address your concern, the slopes have
been further reduced to 2:1 and reseeded. Homestake is very
confident that successful revegetation will occur on these slopes.
The diversion structure around the lower tailings impoundment
was designed, permitted and constructed to pass the 100 year, 24
hour event (2.8 inches). As requested, a hydrologic evaluation was
conducted for all the diversion systems at the Bulldog Mine. As
presented in Attachment A the diversions around the lower tailings
impoundment, as constructed, will safely pass the designed and
permitted 100 year, 24 hour storm event. As discussed further in
this letter Homestake does not believe that the PMP event is
appropriate for this project. As the 100 year event was the
permitted event and that the existing structures are functioning
without erosion, re-construction to meet the PMP event should not
be required. The PMP event would require placement of 14 inch mean
1
HOMESTAKE MINING COMPANY
650 CALIFORNIA STREET • SAN FRANCISCO • CA 9L10B Z]BB f<15) 98~-Bi50
