SCHLAGE
Part of worldwide Ingersoll-Rand
Carl "Bud" Herskind, President
Transit Mix Concrete Company
444 East Costilla
Colorado Springs, CO 80903
RE. APPROVAL OF PROPOSED WELL LOCATIONS
GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION PROGRAM
Mr. Herskind:
Security Operations
Schlage Lock Company
3899 Hancock Expressway
Security, Colorado 80911
(719) 390-5071
July 14, 1997
As we have discussed, Schlage Lock Company is proposing to drill several new extraction wells
on property owned by Transit Mix Concrete Company. The proposed extraction wells are part of
an ongoing groundwater remediation program. In accordance with the Access and Use
Agreement of September 13, 1996, we are requesting your approval of proposed well locations
that are on your property.
The proposed extraction wells will be drilled at the locations indicated as EW-2 Extraction on the
enclosed Figure 1. We propose to drill about four deep extraction wells and ten to twelve
shallow extraction wells. The combined pumping rate for the deep wells will be about 320
gallons per minute. The shallow wells will be pumped at a combined rate of about 40 gallons per
minute. The extracted water will be treated, then re-injected at a rate of about 370 gallons per
minute through injection wells located west of the treatment building (Figure 1). The proposed
extraction and injection wells will be located approximately as described in the Workplan for
Installing Groundwater Interception Wells, t't a copy of which was submitted earlier for your
review.
The well locations have been staked near the southern edge of the open area, just north of the tree
line. This area provides acceptable interception of the contaminated groundwater but avoids
possible interference with future mining activities. However, some of the well locations are
within 500 to 600 feet of existing domestic wells owned by Transit Mix Concrete Company
(Figure 1). Tl1e domestic wells are on property currently leased by the Cannon family (Well R-
7) and the Orvis family (Well R-6).
The Colorado State Engineer's Office requires approval from existing well owners before
drilling a new well within 600 feet of any existing well. Approval can be obtained by having the
existing well owner sign a form called the "600 Foot Well Spacing Statement." Wit11 approval
by the existing well owner, the State Engineer can act on the new well application without
seeking hearing testimony from the existing well owner.
t'1 Tredwell & Rollo and S.
