III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This partial inspection of the Arness McGriffen Mine was conducted by DRMS staff from the Durango
Field Office, 701 Camino del Rio, Room 125, Durango, CO 81301, phone (970) 247-5469. The permit
for the Arness McGriffen Mine was revoked and bond forfeited in May 1989. The $13,750 financial
warranty was utilized for final reclamation. Three photos accompany this report.
Public access to the site and to nearby state lands is controlled by the Colorado Division of Wildlife, by
locked gate. The gate was not locked during the time of this inspection.
The access road was heavily rutted by traffic and drainage. Off-road vehicles have cut switchbacks
for the access road and have driven over reclamation areas. The off-road traffic has disrupted the
protective vegetative cover and encourages erosion of previously stabilized areas. Domestic trash
has been illegally dumped at the portal bench area.
Soil conditions were dry. No individuals were contacted, no activities were observed
