III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Kent Gorham of the Colorado Division of Minerals
and Geology. This former underground mine was reclaimed and reseeded in 1996 and early
1997. Ground conditions on this day were damp due to persistent showers and the weather
was warm and humid.
Signs and Markers
The mine identification sign was observed along the entrance road immediately north of the
former railroad crossing. The information presented on the sign was found in compliance
with Ruies 4.02 and 4.30.2(3). Markers at this site are white PC pipe and are located at the
edge of the reclaimed areas.
Revegetation
Vegetation is enjoying an outstanding year of growth due to frequent rainfall and warm
temperatures. This is the eighth year since initial seeding of the site in 1996. Seeded
species are abundant and seem well established. Some native annual weeds and forb
species such as sunflower and sweet clover compliment the vegetation community.
Abundant rainfall also has helped the scotch thistle. These weeds were mechanically
removed as they were encountered during the traverse of the site. The operator may want to
initiate a thorough weed removal effort before these plants have set seed.
Overall, the site appeared in excellent condition for the summer season. Please complete
repair of the reference area fence and remove all mining debris this field season.
