This was an aerial inspection flown by Harry Ranney of the Colorado Division of
Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (Division), Oblique aerial photographs were taken and
reviewed in the office by Kent Gorham of the Division on January 19. 2007. Deserado is an
active underground mine that produced in excess of 1.6 million tons of coal m 2006. Fresh
snow blanketed all areas.
Roads and ponds are snow-
covered. although roads had
been bladed of recent snowfall,
It does not appear that
temperatures are sufficiently
high to cause snowmelt as no
runoff or evidence of runoff was
observed, The facility area
appeared active and orderly. A
tram was berng loaded at the
coal loadout on this day.
The refuse area consists of a
number of separate refuse
piles. All refuse piles and
sediment ponds were snow-
covered No evidence of
slumps, slides, or damage was
noted in any of the photographs
taken
Nothing warranting immediate
on-the-ground inspection was
noted.
