The operator
was contacted about the inspection and a time was arranged to meet at the site. The operator's representative named
on page one was present throughout the inspection.
The permit ID sign was posted at the entrance gate near the highway. The permit boundary markers were observed.
Though the operator has occasional trouble keeping the eastern boundary line marked, due to the landowner's livestock,
the operation is not encroaching on that line and there is presently no concern of the operation passing outside the permit
area. The operator should perhaps try different methods of boundary marking, and inform the Division of such.
The western wall of the pit has been in reclamation for several years, and exhibits a thin stand of the revegetated grass
species. The north and northeast walls of the pit have been graded, topsoiled and seeded (in 19971. The grass seed does
not appear to have been successful; very little of the seeded grasses were observed on those areas. There is, however,
a healthy stand of annual weeds growing there: tansy mustard, mssian thistle, and kochia. Yellow sweetclover also grows
on much of the graded or otherwise disturbed portions of the site. There were no noxious weeds observed.
Successful revegetation was discussed onsite, including reseeding this year with the same species (but during late falll,
trying a different seed mix recommended by NRCS, mowing weeds, and excluding livestock during seedling establishment.
If a new seed mix is to be used, it will have to be approved by the Division as a technical revision before final release.
Contact this office if there are questions. Since this was not a release inspection, and the weedy portions of the reclaimed
slopes were only seeded last year, the topic of revegetation will not be noted as a problem in this report, but the operator
should endeavor to control the weeds and allow the grass to become established as soon as possible.
There were a couple of product stockpiles, and a wheeled loader parked on the site. Topsoil was stockpiled mainly along
the northeast boundary, out of the way of disturbance, and adequately protected for later use in reclamation. Future
excavation will occur in the southern or southeastern end of the pit. Usable aggregate seems to thin out in the northern
end, and no more mining there is anticipated. Future crushing may take place down in the floor or up on the unmined bench
on the east. The operator will leave a ramp road into the pit for the landowner's use after reclamation, at an exact location
to be determined later.
This is a clean and orderly operation. No other items were noted or discussed during the inspection. No problems were
observed.
