NINE ID / OR PROSPECTING ID ~
INSPECTION DATE 9/11/95
(Page 2)
M-77-215

INSPECTOR'S INITIALS ACS
This inspection was conducted to collect samples of tailing eolide from both the upper and
lower tailing impoundments. Both samples are to be subjected to a single contact batch
leachability teat, with the leachate analyzed for major ion chemistry and a selected set of
heavy metals. The tailing sample from the lower pond will be further subjected to a
sequential batch leachability test comprised of multiple sequential contacts between liquids
and eolide.
It has been the intention of both the Division and Homestake to meet and discuss the statue
of the Bulldog Mine given the nature of the Declaratory Order issued by the Hined Land
Reclamation Board on 8/24/95. It is the Division's view that having the results of the
tailing leachability testing and analysis will facilitate the discussions during the proposed
meeting. Once the results are available (reportedly during the week of 10/9/95) the Division
will contact Homestake to set up a meeting.
The following describes the sampling procedures:
LOWER TAILING POND
Reclamation of the lower tailings ie by direct revegetation. No soil or clay cap has been
applied, and tailing material ie exposed at the ground surface. Excavated a pit into tailing
at the lower tailing impoundment. The pit was located near the east-west center of the
impoundment, approximately 150 feet (measured by pacing) from the tailing/embankment fill
interface. Used a clean shovel to excavate to approximately 3 foot depth, then filled a new
plastic, 5-gallon pail to approximately 1/2 full. Excavated a second, similar pit
approximately 225 feet (measured by pacing) from the tailing/embankment fill interface, and
finished filling the 5-gallon pail from this second pit. The pail was securely capped and
marked with sample I.D. M-77-215-L.
UPPER TAILING POND
The sampling shovel was thoroughly cleaned using distilled water. Fill dirt has been spread
over tailing in moat locations in the upper impoundment in order to provide positive drainage
to the tailing dam breach located at the southwest corner of the impoundment. Attempted to
excavate through the fill dirt to tailing at a location near the geographic center of the
pond, but after approximately 3 feet of difficult digging in rocky material, this location
was backfilled and abandoned. An area where tailing ie exposed at the surface was located
near the dam breach. A pit approximately 2 feet deep was excavated, and then a new 5-gallon
plastic pail was filled with tailing. The pail was securely capped and marked with sample
I.D. M-77-215-U.
Attached to this report are the Division's internal sampling forme.
CHAIN OF CUSTODY
Both samples (H-77-215-U and M-77-215-L) were delivered to David McWharter of Chemac
Environmental Services at approximately 17:45 on 9-11-95. The samples were in cont inu oue
possession of the sampler until delivered to Mr. McWharter.
cc: Steve Shuey, DMG - Durango
Harry Posey, DHG
I & E Contact Address
^ CE
NAME Alan D.
