Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection and the facts or
evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This partial inspection of the Hamilton Coal Mine was conducted by DMG staff from
the Durango Office, 701 Camino Del Rio, Room 125, Durango, CO 81301, phone (970)
247-5469. No activities were observed, no mine personnel encountered during the
time of this inspection. Operator has commenced final reclamation.
Mine roads were covered in shaded areas, with a couple inches of snow. Roads
located in sunny areas were slightly muddy, but solid and stable. Road side drainage
ditches and culverts were clear and functional.
Sediment pond A, located at the far north end of the permit area was dry. Primary and
secondary spillways were clear. Pond embankment and pond inslopes appeared stable.
Sediment pond B, located at the NE corner of the permit area, was muddy at the end
near the outlet, no surface water present. Primary and secondary spillways appeared
clear and stable. The valve on the primary spillway was in the open position. Massive
pond embankment was well vegetated and stable.
Revegetation efforts appear to be successfully establishing permanent, desirable
vegetative stands across the majority of the site. Shrub densities appear to be good in
most areas. However, there are several large patches near the northwest end of the
Mining Area No. 1 where kochia and Russian thistle appear dominant. Interseeding of
these patches is recommended to accelerate establishment of desirable vegetative
cover in these areas.
