' r ~ IPage 21 •
MINE ID tl OR PROSPECTING ID # M-82-154
INSPECTION DATE 6-19-97 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS SSS
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine inspection of the Farnsworth Gravel Pit No. 2, located approximately 1 mile west of Paonia. The operation is
permitted for disturbance of 8.4 acres for extraction and processing of sand and gravel. Reclamation is mininmal due to the pre-
disturbed nature of the processing area and the natural gravel recharge of the extraction area.
The fenced south-eastern edge of the permit area is the only adequately marked boundary of the permit area. The operator will need
to insta{I additional markers to make the remaining permit boundary readily identifiable. These markers will need to be placed
accurately. The boundary that is in the river channel is not required to be marked.
The river channel appears to be stable with no evidence of downcutting or headcutting. The south riverbank, near the lower end
of the permit area does exhibit some minor sidecutting apparently because of its position on [he outside bank of a riverbend. The
operator has dumped old broken concrete riprap over the bank in an effort to stabilize it. The operator is encouraged to contact the
Army Corps of Engineers prior to any more armoring of riverbank.
Due to increasing concern over in-stream mining and river channel stability, the operator is strongly encouraged to initiate a river
channel survey and monitoring progrm. The program should survey the river channel cross-section at several points within the permit
area and at positions above and below the permit area. The survey should be conducted each season just prior to mining, and just
after mining is completed.
E/2 SE/4 Sec. 1, T14S, R92W, 6th P.M.
I & E Contact Address
NAME Patricia Farnsworth
OPERATOR Farnsworth Construction Co.
STREET 1425 4005 Lane
CITY/STATE/ZIP Paonia, Colorado 81428
cc: Tom Gillis, DMG
~j CE -Nick Mezeii -Grand Junction
~ BL
~ FS
~ HW
~ HMWMD ICHI
~ SE
~ WOCD ICHI
~ OTHER
