Fremont County Weed Control
6i5 Macon Avenue
Conan City, Colorado 81212
October 3, 2006
Mr. William Tezak
Colorado Quarries Inc.
Canon City, Colorado 81212
RED Weed Management on Property Associated with Mica Lode Pit M-77-144
Dear Mr. Tezak,
This letter is provided to report on observations regarding weed
infestations for property you have permitted near the Royal Gorge area
west of Canon City (Mica Lode Pit). The access road from the road leading to
the Royal Gorge Bridge south of state highway 50 into the inactive mining
area, roads and benches at the mine and related property is as you know
infested with Spotted, Diffuse and Russian Knapweed.
Per my review of the area and a tour on September 27, 2006, it is estimated
that future control efforts should include herbicide spraying in selected
areas. The local infestations will require spot spraying along the main roads,
in adjacent disturbed areas and rangeland on areas of the permitted mine
site.
Herbicides have been shown to be effective in a multi-year program where
mechanical, cultural and biological controls are also part of management.
Timing of herbicide application in the next growing season coupled with a
relaxed or limited use of graders or other equipment in the infested areas
can also limit the spread of these important and potentially damaging weeds.
In this case, n timetable should be established to control the infestation.
Treatment should be initiated as soon as practical in the 2007-growing
season. Continued regular management in succeeding years will be required to
control the noxious weeds at a reduced expense and effort. Fremont County
can provide the service and strategy to implement your weed management
efforts.
I will look forward to providing follow-up information and discuss a strategy
in the near future ns you may request.
lace ~e ~ ~ ~
-J:R. Phillips, Manager
