MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #
INSPECTION DATE 10/15/97
(Page 21
M-97-089
OBSERVATIONS

INSPECTOR'S INITIALS WHE
This pre-operations inspection was conducted as part of DMG review process of the Regular 112c
application for the Stone Gravel Pit. The proposed operation will affect 158 acres and is located
approximately 6 miles SW of Cortez, at 5880' elevation, in portions of the NW 1l4 of the NE 114
of Section 13, T35N, R17W, NMPM, Montezuma County. Application states that BLM is the
surface owner, subsurface owner is American Cancer Society and American Heart Association.
Application states that material processing will include on-site crushing, screening and stockpiling.
Post Mining Land Use (PMLU) is rangeland.
Public notice, required by Rule 1.6.211-Ib1, was posted at the site entrance. Public access is
controlled by barbed wire fence and wire gate along County Road 21. Access to site is gained
from CR 21 via apre-existing road.
Pre-existing road enters proposed permit area along the SE side and continued through the south
end. Pre-existing road branched shortly after gate to the north, second branch was located along
the south boundary. Pre-existing road provided access to adjoining lands. Adjoining lands are
owned by BLM (north-, Ute Mountain Tribe (westl, Messinger and Webster (south-, Katz and
Blackmore and Trost and Olin and Bell and Emerson and Morris (east, across CR 21).
Permanent man made structures, within 200' of the affected area, were limited to access roads,
fence line along south boundary area, and CR 21 and fence along east boundary area.
Proposed permit area is gentle rolling terrain, vegetative cover consists of sage and grasses, few
junipers and weeds. Evidence of deer, cattle and horses were observed. Knapweed was observed
within permit area. Operator is encouraged to utilize vigorous weed control efforts to control
established knapweed within permit area.
Evidence of previous mining activities were observed along the SW side of the proposed permit
area. DMG records indicate that pre-law and permitted mining operations have existed in the area.
Reclamation of permitted mining disturbance appeared to meet minimum requirements of the Act
and Rules and Regulations. Reclamation of pre-law or unpermitted mining disturbances appeared
limited to minor backsloping of highwalls, vegetative cover was established but intermittent, weeds
present. Portions of the previously disturbed areas have been redisturbed, discarded tires and
debris littered the area.
I & E Contact Address
NAME
OPERATOR
STREET
CITY/STATE/ZIP
Daren Stone
Stone Gravel Pit
24600 County Road P
Dolores.
