Coal Mine Waste
The 100 year diversion ditch above and running down
slope on the northern edge of the fill was inspected
and found to be in good condition. The diversion
consists of an open ditch above the fill which drains
into~a flexible black plastic corrugated pipe that
runs down slope and empties in another open ditch at
the bottom of the fill.
Previous state and federal inspection reports indicate
that there was a stability problem on the face of the
fill in the past. The inspection party walked over
this area during this inspection and found the area to
appear stable. No slumps or cracks were found and
vegetation was established on the slope. Stability
monitoring records were reviewed during the course of
the inspection and no problems were noted.
There is a small seep at the bottom of the upper
bench slope at the north end of the fill. At the time
of the inspection the area appeared to be somewhat
"boggy" but there was no runoff from the area. Salt
deposits are evident as well as iron deposits. The seep
is being monitored by the operator.
