are undertaken to control noxious weeds throughout Coal Basin, weed control at reclaimed azeas will
again become an issue.
Over Grazing of Reclaimed Lands
The public portions of the reclaimed Coal Basin Mine aze grazed under a lease issued by the U.S.
Forest Service. Some of the reclaimed azeas have been overgrazed for a number of years. The result
of overgrazing is that the seed bank of desirable species from the established plants is not as likely to
establish at the reclaimed azeas. Ideally, grazing should be more intensively managed to allow the
reclamation species planted at Coal Basin an opportunity to become more securely established over
time.
Minimizing Erosion from Mine Bench Outslopes
Two of the mine bench outslopes could benefit from the establishment of additional vegetation to
contain sediment at the toe of these slopes. These slopes are located neaz the Mine 1 Storage Bench
and neaz the Mine 5 fan entry bench. If funding is available, an attempt to establish additional
vegetation at these two azeas will be made in 2007.
Rill and Gu/ly Repair on Reclaimed Roads
Some gully development has been identified neaz the top of the Mine 3 access road. Work will be
accomplished in 2007 to re-direct contributory water, and to repair the gullies which have formed in
this azea.
VIII. Proposed Reduced Insaection Frequency
The Division proposes to inspect this site on a seasonal basis beginning in May of each yeaz, or at the
first opportunity when snow conditions allow access. This first seasonal inspection will be a complete
inspection, documenting ground conditions after spring runoff has effectively ceased. The second
seasonal inspection will be done in the fall, following any site maintenance activities that may have
been conducted during the field season. This inspection plan results in two site inspections each yeaz,
with possible additional site visits during any maintenance work.
Coal Basin Mine Reduced Inspection Frequency September 10, 2007
12
