III. COMMENTS - COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations
made during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during
the inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Kent Gorham of the Colorado Division of
Minerals and Geology. This former underground mine was reclaimed and reseeded in
1996 and early 1997. The mine has achieved a Phase II bond release for the
majority of the disturbed area. Ground conditions were slightly damp and the
weather was cool and overcast.
Revegetation
The site is much improved over this time last year, with regard to the live
vegetative cover. Desirable species noted include blue flax, western wheatgrass,
smooth brome, cicer milkvetch, and alfalfa. Various other annual plants were
noted. While weeds were less of a problem last year due to drought, better
moisture this growing season has resulted in an abundance of weeds on some areas.
Scotch thistle and houndstongue are abundant on the reclaimed areas of ponds 2, 3,
and 4. The operator should conduct weed control activities before these plants
set seeds this season.
Vegetation at the former ventilation shafts in Apache Canyon is qualitatively
rated as good.
3
