a

OBSERVATIONS
This was a normal monitoring inspection conducted by Tony Waldron of DMG along with Mike
Elder of Robinson Brick Company. The site is located approximately 16 miles northwest of
Kiowa, Colorado. The pit consists of two separate parcels located on the drainage divide of
Box Elder Creek and Kiowa Creek. The "Red" pit is located immediately adjacent and just south
of Elbert County Road 194, also known as County Line Road, in the Box Elder watershed and the
"Buff" pit is approximately one mile east and just south of the road in the Kiowa watershed.
The Red Pit consists of a fairly sizeable pit and the associated clay stockpile. There was
a fair amount of water in the bottom of the pit which seems to serve as a sediment control
structure by receiving runoff from the area around the clay stockpile, the pit disturbance
and the topsoil stockpile just south of the pit. During the next inspection, the pit should
be checked for the presence of water so that DMG can characterize whether this is truly
surface water and not groundwater.
The Buff Pit consisted of a very small disturbance and associated material stockpile which
could almost be characertized as an exploration pit. Unfortunately, the disturbance
contained a substantial stand of the prohibited noxious weed Centaurea diffusa, commonly
known as diffuse knapweed. As a result, this is being cited as a problem on page three of
this report along with appropriate corrective actions which will be to incorporate a noxious
weed control plan into the permit application and site operation. The plan should include
things such as methods of weed control, treatment windows, follow-up, etc. In addition, the
plan should be specific about when and how this particular stand of diffuse knapweed will be
treated. The earliest this could probably occur is during the spring of 2000, but follow-up
will be critical to fully eliminate this infestation.
This concluded the inspection.
I & E_ ontact Addres
NAME Mark S.
