West Elk Mine
The permittee should be commended for good overall site maintenance,
particularly the nearly completed work in accordance with MR No. 130 to
shotcrete all drainage ditches on the site and continuing efforts to improve
materials handling/storage/disposal at the shop areas.
On 10/6/94 Ms. Johnston and myself reviewed the records at the Gunnison
County Courthouse, Office of the Planning Director, Joanne M. Williams. The
records contained the approved permit, MR's and TR's to the permit, and
exploration approvals. Mr. Barbe indicated during our on site records review
that a letter had been sent to the Planning Director for addition to the permit
which indicated where copies of inspection reports and enforcement actions
could be obtained. We could not locate this letter as Ms. Williams was not
present during our review. The permittee should routinely maintain the permit
and subsequent revisions so the document available for public review is well
organized and contains the most up to date materials which have been
approved by DMG. This concluded the inspection.
Please address any questions/comments concerning this report to Henry Austin
at (505) 766-1486.
