III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the
inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
On September 9, 1996, William J. Carter along with David Berry of the
Division of Minerals and Geology conducted a partial inspection of the
Hawk's Nest Mine. Due to the fact that this is a bond forfeiture site, there was
no operaior representative present.
Backfill and Gradinl~:
During the last inspeciion, the West Portal was improperly identified. At this
time the West Portal was inspected and found to have some minor settling
and should be inspected on a regular basis to note if the settling progresses or
stabilizes.
During the last inspection, the lower bench of the East Mine area is showing
signs of erosion. Two straw bales were placed in an attempt to control the
erosion in this area. Continued monitoring should be done to verify if this
attempt is successful or if further work is required.
SUDPOrt Facilities:
During the inspection, some trash was removed from the site. This will be
done in the future as an ongoing routine during inspection to keep the area
clean of cans and other small scrap deposits. The same small pile of trash,
("scrap metal and concrete rubble") identified in the previous two inspection
reports, remains.
