Mr. Calvin Joyner
September 3, 1998
Page 3
S
Mr. Jorgenson also told Susan that Randy said that the county took five loads
of top soil into the mining operation. Susan Campbell Bell, Betty Morris and
Rick Bell also saw loads going into the mining azea. It is our understanding
that the county had been hauling gravel to the MBsM Truck Stop for the state
weigh station project. Could it be possible that the top soil the county is taking
into the mining area is coming from the MSsM Truck Stop?
At approximately 9:53 a.m. a small, white water truck left the mining area.
This truck did not spray water on the access road or the county roads. At
10:49, 11:34 am. and 1:00 p.m. a small white water truck entered the mining
area. It was quite obvious that these trucks did not control the fugitive dust.
At 3:00 p.m. an orange, County water truck sprayed County Road F and the
access road. County Road 21 was sprayed with water at 4:14 p.m.
On behalf of 1'he Friends of South Montezuma Valley, Inc. we would like to know
if the intent of the Bureau of Land management is to close off public access to
this public land?
We would also like to ]mow if the BLM and the Department of Minerals and
Geologyy are willing to enforce Mr. Stone's commitment to the control fugitive
dust? As citizens surrounding the mining operation we aze concerned about
particulate matter because they reach the deepest recesses of the lungs.
Particulate matter causes prematwe death, respiratory related hospital
admissions, aggravated asthma, acute respiratory symptoms, chronic
bronchitis and decreased lung function.
We would appreciate your assistance in this matter. We would hope that you
would be concerned with public health especially when the environmental
impact comes from public land managed by the BLM, permits issued by DMG
and practices and procedures being conducted by the county.
Sincerely,
The Friends of South Montezuma Valley, Inc.
Susan Campbell Bell, Secretary/Treasurer
6150 County Road 21, P.
