.' WALKER MINING AND MILLII ~~
December 5, 1985
Page 2
4. Only mine related refuse is disposed of at the mine site. Snow slides
have demolished buildings and structures at the mine site each winter since
early Spring 1981. Each year more damage has been done, resulting in more
trash and debris at the site. The latest damage was April 1985. A mayor
cleanup of the area was done during the Spring and Summer 1985.
All possible operations and structures are now underground and protected
from future slide damage. There is an existing scrap iron pile which is
in constant use. Trash cans and barrels are at several locations on the
site. Even at the time of the October 15, 1985 inspection, refuse was
either being burned or buried in a waste rock pit. Elirther cleanup of
the past slides is planned for Spring 1986 as soon as the snow melts.
All chemicals are stored underground according to MSHA and manufacture's
recommendations and regulations. They are safe from any snowslide, flood,
theft or vandalism. Any possible spillage of chemicals rill drain into a
buried tank, preventing any possible contamination of water drainage, water
or soil. Spilled solutions will be reburned to the mill circuit. The
totally self-contained, underground, temporary mill reuses all chemical
solutions, therefore no disposal is necessary and there is no possibility
of either soil or water contamination.
5. The mine site is partially located on the side of a hill. Spring
runoff occurs mainly along a small creek as shown on the enclosed map.
Ditches along the upper road (above the mine area) to Yankee Hoy Basin
is usually done by the county in the spring. The small creek mentioned
flows across the mine area, is contained by way of berms and culverts.
It is contained and controlled, but has not been halted, diverted or
contaminated.
6. The lower portal drainage area has been trenched from the portal to
the settling pond. The settling pond has been upgraded as recommended.
'7. A current map of all surface in use is enclosed.
Sondra Blanaett
Sec-Trees
Encl: Map of land in use
cc: David L. Ylalker
