Cattany
Colorado Springs, CO. 80926 Acting Division Director
Re: Corrective Action Due Date, Red Canyon Quazry, M-1985-043
Deaz Mr. Stack:
On June 20, 2002, the Division completed a partial inspection of your quarry operation.
Specifically, the retention sedimentation ponds were reviewed to ensure they were still capable
of containing the 2 year 24 hour precipitation event, as approved in the latest amendment.
As noted in the inspection report, pond #1 was deemed adequate. Pond #2 was recently moved to
the north (since the highwall moved north) and re-excavated. The dimensions and containment
capcity were unknown so it was noted as a problem in the inspection report. You were required
to submit a new mining plan map showing the new location of the pond. Also, you were required
to provide the dimensions of the new pond so its capacity could be calculated.
In addition, since pond #3 has been totally eliminated, you were required to submit a technical
revision to receive approval for the elimination of the pond (along with all the technical data
necessazy to demonstrate that the pond is not needed). Or, if the pond is to be moved to another
location, you were required to submit a revised mining plan map showing the new location and
the revised dimensions.
The corrective action due date for these problems is September 6, 2002. If you fail to respond to
the required corrective actions by the due date, the problems may become possible violations and
the items may be presented to the Mined Land Reclamation Board at the October 16-17, 2002
Board meeting.
If you have any questions, please give me a call at 303-866-4060.
Sincerely,
~~
James Dllhe
Environmental Protection Specialist
