Long
Dwision Director
Dear Mr. Conger:
The Division received Nielsons, Inc.'s response to the report issued for the June 29, 2000 inspection of the
Craig Pit. Following is the Division's response to that letter.
Report Item 1: Thank you for clarifying where the markers were. Because of the agricultural situation on
the former processing/stockpile area, minimal boundary marking will be sufficient. Please ensure the photos
of the replaced markers are submitted by the August 31, 2000 correction date.
Report Item 2: The Division understands that some deposit depths cannot be determined with simple
trench excavation methods , so the mining plan does not include that specification. However, the
reclamation plan does specify a finished pit floor elevation and the reclamation cost estimate is calculated
using this information.
Nielson's Inc. is responsible for maintaining adequate financial warranty, at all times, for the Craig Pit.
Therefore, if deviation from the approved mining plan is required, Nielsons, Inc. must submit a revision to
the permit riD Or LO effecting the change. If the Division determines that the revision has more than a minor
affect on the reclamation plan, Nielsons, Inc. may be required to submit the revision as an amendment,
allowing for public input to the process.
The Division will extend the correction date for this item to September 29, 2000. Failure to submit the
revision by that date may result in an enforcement action.
Report Item 3: Calculation of the reclamation cost estimate will be delayed until September 29'".
Report Item 4: The Division will extend the correction date for this item to September 29, 2000.
Report Item 5: The Division will extend the correction date for this item to September 29, 2000. The
revision submittal must include a weed control plan that is targeted at bringing the weed problem under
control within three years.
If you need additional information, please contact me at the Division of Minerals and Geology, Durango Field
Office, 701 Camino Del Rio, Room 125, Durango, Colorado 81301, telephone no. 970-247-5062.
Sincerely
Steve S. huey
Environmental Protection pecialist
