. •,
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made during the
inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection and the facts or
evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This partial inspection of the Arness McGriffen Mine was conducted by DMG staff from
the Durango Office, 701 Camino Del Rio, Room 125, Durango, CO 81301, phone (970)
247-5469. The permit for the Arness McGriffen Mine was revoked over 5 years ago.
Financial warranty was forfeited and utilized for final reclamation. No activities were
observed, no personnel encountered during the time of this inspection.
The mine access road remains open to provide access to state lands, located north of
the permit area. Public access to the site and adjacent state lands is controlled by
locked cable gate closure, recently constructed across the road. A sign on the gate
indicates that public lands are state lands and that the Colorado Division of Wildlife has
restricted public access to the area from mid November through mid March. Portions
of the access road have been graded, drainage ditches repaired to appropriately convey
runoff, and previous erosion damages to the road repaired.
Portions of the reclaimed area have been adversely impacted by off-road traffic.
Domestic debris has been illegally dumped by unknown individuals. Some of the
discarded debris previously identified, appeared to have been removed from site.
Weeds, including several varieties of thistle were observed along the access road and
within reclaimed areas.
