jPage 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: _ ~~-~n()n=n5?
INSPECTION DATE: ~i/~l(0_d INSPECTOR=S INITIALS: p lw
OBSER`/ATIONS
This was apre-operational inspection was conducted t,y Tony Waldron of DMG along with a representative of
Las Animas County. The site is located approximately 12 miles west of Trinidad, Colorado and sits on an alluvial
terrace on the south side of the Purgatoire River. The county wants to convert an existing 1 l Oc operation into a
1 12c by adding 8.84 acres to the existing 9.90 acres for a new total permitted area of 18.74 acres. The
additional area will be down-slope from the existing disturbed area. The existing area is in an upland position
along a small ridge line.
The site generally slopes north to a point where it drops off of the terrace across a steep slope to the river valley.
The existing site conditions are an cpen pinon-juniper overstory with a blue grama-western wheatgrass
understory with widely scattered shrubs. Mining of the .site will not cause any significant problems, however, the
main item of concern for the Division is the presence of a very poorly delineated cemetery. Upon reviewing the
site, it is difficult to discern that such a site exists, however, locals insist that it is there and the operator has
already delineated its location on their proposed mining plan map and committed to staying at least 10 feet
away from the perimeter of the site. It was conveyed io the inspector that no actual mining would be
occurring near this location except for equipment traffic along the south side but mining would come within
200 feet on the east side. It was suggested thof a greater buffer distance would probably be a good idea
given the uncertainty of the cemetery's exact location. In addition, the perimeter as depicted on the map or
with the larger buffer, should be fenced to clearly delineate where traffic and mining could and could not
proceed. The operator indicated that the county would complete this activity prior to initiating mining on this
site. No other problems were noted and this concluded the inspection.
I & E Contact Address
NAME: Phil Dorenkamc~
OPERATOR: Las Animas Cou~y Road and Bridae
STREET: 900x1 N.
