III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are ~.amnents on the inspection. The Rimrock
Mine consists of approximately seven acres of reclamation. The weather was seasonal and
mild. Ground conditions were damp due to rain the previous day.
Availability of Records
The mine records are kept at the office of the Las Animas County Planner at the Trinidad
courthouse. The insurance certificate shows an expiration date o(July 1, 2003. Anew,
current certificate is required to be on-file with the mine records. Also, the recently renewed
NPDES general permit for coal mining should be on file as well with the mine records. All
other records were found in compliance as shown on page 2a of this report.
Hydrologic Balance
The sediment pond appeared in good condition and was holding murky water six inches
below the primary discharge pipe. Recent rains have produced small amounts of runoff at
this site. There was no evidence that the pond had discharged due to the storm runoff.
Revegetation
Vegetation at the site appeared on peak conditions due to the frequent rains in the region.
Warm season grasses are reproducing and appear vigorous and healthy. Sideoats grama,
blue grama, switchgrass, and big bluestem were all observed. The desirable shrub winterfat
is also present especially east of the light use road at the south end of the reclaimed area.
No evidence of grazing was noted and cattle were not observed on the reclaimed area or in
the surrounding rangeland.
... . b .1M
•~' . 1
'~w~r ., ~~,, t .fie ~
:..- - ~~
. ~~.. ~',
'~, ..,~
,. 1;.1'
1 ~.
._ s~, .d
~ti~.
