The site is located on the
southeast corner of the intersection of G Road and 23 Road, approximately 1 /3 mile north of Highway 6 and 50 on the west
side of Grand Junction.
The site is a nearly flat 37.6 acre parcel that is predominantly covered with kochia, greasewood, tamarisk, and halogeton.
The site exhibits large patches with alkali deposits on the soil surface. Topsoil appears to be non-existent on the site. The
operator indicated that the groundwater table is approximately 10 feet below current ground level.
The City of Grand Junction required that the applicant fence and landscape a small corridor along 23 Road and G Road
rights-of-way. Portions of this fencing and landscaping have been completed on the southwest side of the permit boundary.
The area of completed landscaping along 23 Road corresponds to the western edge of an approximate 5 acre area on the
southwest corner of the site that is currently disturbed by stockpiles of various construction materials that have been
imported to the site. These materials include old asphalt, fill dirt, and riprap. The operation in this area was issued a
special use permit by the City of Grand Junction for the stockpiling operation. There are some scrap culverts stored on
site as well. The applicant needs to be aware that the reclamation bond will be calculated to include disposal costs for
any scrap material on site during the mining operation.
Some structures appeared to be within 200 feet of the site, but were not indicated on the permit maps. There is a building
and fence north of G Road on the northeast corner of the site. The operator was instructed to identify any other utilities
or structures that may occur on the opposite side of the roads adjacent to the pit.
The fence along the east side of the property is a dilapidated barbed wire fence that is currently non-functional.
The south bank of the Canning Factor Ditch, at the location of the outlet of the culvert at the northeast corner of the site,
has a significant slump that requires repair. This observation is made in this report to identify this problem so the applicant
is not held liable for the problem in the future.
There are numerous piles of fill dirt dumped at various locations on the permit area. These piles were apparently brought
in and dumped in the past, in preparation to raise the existing elevation of the current ground level.
The road right of way along 23 Road and G Road have a significant amount of whitetop. It is recommended that the
applicant include a weed control plan in the application and implement weed control measures prior to and during the
mining operation. The site cannot be released after mining is completed if the site has an infestation of noxious weeds.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to:
Division of Minerals and Geology, 701 Camino Del Rio, Room 125, Durango, Colorado 81301, Attn: Steve Shuey, phone
no. 970-247-5062.
I & E Contact Address cc: Tom Gillis, DMG
^ CE
NAME Martin Azcarraoa ^ BL
OPERATOR M.
