COMMENTS-COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action,
This was a partial inspection conducted by Kent Gorham of the Colorado Division of
Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (Drviston). This processing and Ioadout site has been
inactive since June 2001 after the closure of the Lorencito Mine (#C-96-084). The weather
was warm with thunderstorms threatening. Ground conditions on this day were generally
dry.
Roads
Recurrent rains have resulted in some sedimentation along the access road to the RDA.
The lower portion of the road in particular, regwres some ditch re-shaping and culvert inlet
cleanout work, Rockfall and sedimentation from the road cut slope is a continuing
maintenance issue. Crowning of the road surface would also improve the drainage and
reduce rutting of the road surface.
Hydrologic F3alance
The operator estimates the mine site has received about four inches of rainfall in the month
of August, All sediment ponds at the site contained water. with ponds 7 and 8 more than'/.
full Pond 4 held a modest amount of water in the southeast corner Containments near the
conveyor and at the West Mine were dry or holding small amounts of water. Perimeter
ditches along the aver were checked and found in good condition with no evidence of
breaching or damage
Processing Waste
Signrficant summer rainfall
has improved the
vegetation on the four
south-facing outslopes of
the RDA The most
recently reclaimed upper
bench showed excellent
growth, especially the warm
season grasses blue grama
and big bluestem Runoff
has also resulted in some
movement of riprap in the
west downdrain about Y, the
way to pond 8
Repositioning of rock is
necessary where the ditch
is not flanked by the natural
valley sideslope All flows
entered pond 8 as required.
,1:,,..,:~.. ,,. .
k~-:'~~' r- ~~
"r
