/~Kennecott '
/~ . Ene~gY , --
colawyc roof company L.P. ` °'
Memorandum
November 13, 2000
For: CDMG Inspection File, September 13, 2000 Inspection
2000 Topsoil Removal Variances. East PIt
On September 13, 2000 we notified the CDMG of the need to address an additional topsoil variance for
an area in the East Pit where the contractor could not remove topsoil for safety reasons. Selected
hillslopes were too steep, with so much rock outcrop that the stripping dozer could not safely remove
the topsoil. Byron Walker came to inspect the site and provided the approval for the variance. See the
9/13/00 CDMG Inspection report for additional details.
The following pictures provide an overview of the area after stripping. The contractor used a trackhoe
to remove the topsoil and place it into small 30ton trucks for transport to the reclaimed area. The
contractor was instructed to reach up as high on both slopes to remove as much of the topsoil as
possible. The contractor also dug into the bottom of the draw until he reached bedrock materials. In
many areas, 5 - 8 feet of material was recovered.
Photo I -- View looking west up the draw with the lower limit feast) of the variance area to the left
(10/30/00). Note the narrow bottom of the draw with as much topsoil removed as possible. The area to
the right is also a variance area because of its south exposure, rock outcrops and negligible topsoil
resource.
