Fences have been installed in Oak and East Pyeatt drainage for controlling
cattle grazing on lands next to Trapper. Carp have been put in Johnson #lOR
pond for controlling vegetation and pH.
Springs - The "Bed Spring" (Spring 99-2)in Middle Flume Gulch was dry. The area
surrounding this spring has been brushed in advance of the pit.
Field parameters at the flume in (Middle) Flume Gulch (pre-mining site S-1,
NPDES 019) were: estimated discharge 25 gpm, temperature 12 degrees C., Ec 1800
mmhos/cm, pH 8.0. The flow at S-1 appears to originate a short distance
upstream where the drainage channel is heavily vegetated. Springs in that
location could possible be artesian flows from the 3itl White Sandstone that
underlies the area. Flows at S-1 currently are not related to Middle Flume #3
pond (which is less than 30$ full of water) or Bedspring (which is dry).
Fox Den Spring in Oak drainage continues to flow at an estimated 10 gpm, the
same as it did before the pit passed through this drainage uphill from the
spring. Field parameters were: temperature 10 degrees C., Ec 1300 mmhos/cm, pH
7.2.
Grouad water Monitoring wells - The following wells had caps in place had i.d.
marks, and surface casing was in good condition: GC-1, GC-2, GC-3. Chris Miller
of Miller Water Monitoring Service was sampling wells.
BACKFILL AND GRADING
D pit is working on the last cut before it reaches E pit. E pit remains open
for future backfilling with ash.
No problems were found in the active ash dump area in Ash pit (former A pit).
EXPLOSIVES AND SUPPORT FACILITIES
No problems were found in the explosives storage magazine, the ANFO loading
facility, or the facilities yard area. A large amount of scrap steel has
recently been removed from the bone yard area. The hazardous waste storage area
was in good order.
GENERAL MINE PLAN COMPLIANCE
The amount of area stripped ahead of the pits appears to comply with Trapper's
approved operation plan. A-E pit is active in Middle Flume drainage. Brushing
ahead of the pit has extended into Middle Flume drainage, consistent with the
operation plan as shown on Map M-9 of the permit. There were no more than three
spoil ridges at active pits, consistent with the approved operation plan.
The operator's representative described proposed storage of dragline/loader
buckets on a few thousand square feet of ground across the road from the repair
bay in the facilities area. This ground has previously been disturbed as shown
on the 1999 annual reclamation report map, and is shown as within the active
mining area on Map M-51 in the permit. Consequently, the proposed new use of the
ground for storage does not require a revision to the permit.
Vegetative cover and species diversity appeared good on large tracts of
reclaimed ground seen during the inspection. woody shrub establishment appeared
