INSPECTION REPORT 2
Reclamation of the East Buzzard drainage is to be completed by the
summer of ' 92.
The MSHA sized dam in the area, Coyote, was inspected. water levels in
the impoundment are at an all time low according to company officials.
Work was recently completed on the drawdown device/spillway. Company
officials indicated that one of the collars on one of the joints in the
CMP pipe had slipped. The repair has been completed but the
water level in the pond has not risen back up to the spillway entry so
the pipe outfall should be checked periodically to see if that was the
only leak in the system. Their 12 inch parshall flume below the pond
embankment in the drainage below the dam had about four gallons per
minute flowing through it from a marshy seep area at the toe of the
structure.
Overburden in the Colt pit was being loaded for a shoot to be set off
later in the week. Mr. Gorham measured the distance between the outside
of the loaded holes and the power line on the mine perimeter to verify
blasting limits. The company has requested that the MLRD approve a
blasting variance for shots within the 300 feet buffer zone of that
electric utility line. Approval has been granted. While we were in the
area, the comment was made by the Mi.RD that a portion of the dirty water
` diversion underneath the power line at the mine perimeter needs
additional protection or armouring to maintain the integrity of the
channel. Mr. Agnew said that it would be done.
Rip rap was needed for the outfall of the open channel on west Buzzard
pond #006. Amine water discharge from the pond was noted,
'/~I approximately 3 to 4 gallons per minute.
1 The "Queen Ann" dragline was working on the north side of the Dierenger
~ pit.
The disturbed area from last years mining on the east side of the
Browning pit was graded, resoiled and planted last fall. Small rills
were noted in the reclaimed area on the uphill side of the access road
through the area during the initial part of the inspection. The comment
was made that mulch was needed to prevent further erosion. Later on in
the inspection, we returned to the area and noted that company officials
took the initiative to hand spread mulch over the erosion channels to
stabilize them until vegetation can take over.
East Buzzard upper pond was discharging but there was none occurring
from the lower one in the series.
No Name Gulch Dam #4 was discharging out of the primary spillway into
the lower sediment pond, flow from that pond, dam #5 (NPDES point 002),
was 2.4 inches in the 12 inch flume used for monitoring the outfall.
Mine water was in this area was being pumped from the Dierenger pit.
Records of pumpage are recorded.
