MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-1977-256
INSPECTION DATE: 05/09/2006
(Page 2)
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: RMW
This inspection was conducted as part of the Division of Minerals and Geology (Division) monitoring program.
Present at the inspection were Richard Wenzel from the Division and Bill Clark and Ken Haynes from Grand County
Department of Road and Bridge (GCRB).
The Benson Pit is located on the east side of Grand County Road (GCR) 5 approximately two miles west of Fraser
in Grand County, Colorado. A sign identifying the site as the Benson Pit was posted at the entrance to the site. A
steel gate restricts access to the site. GCR 5 marks the boundary of the southwest section of the pit with the
remainder of the boundaries marked by fences. Traversing the middle of the site in a north-south direction is a
power line easement owned by Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association. At the time of this inspection,
no mining activity was occurring. However, recent mining activity along the west side of the site has resulted in
several large stockpiles of processed material and well graded slopes with grades varying between 2:1 (H:V) to 3:1.
Runoff at the site appears to be contained within the permit boundaries, however, some erosion of the north slope
of the south side of the current mining area was observed (see center of photo labeled "View from Pit Floor
(Looking South)). Appropriate measures should betaken (ie: a diversion ditch) to prevent further erosion. Topsoil
has been stockpiled as a berm along the western boundary of the site and is well vegetated. No mining has
occurred on the eastern half of the site, however, most of the trees have been removed and an access road built
from north to south just east of the power line easement. This road enters/exits the site at the southeast corner of
the site where a new county shop has been constructed outside the permit boundaries. At the time of this
inspection, the eastem half of the site is being used for storage of slash. Noxious weeds were not observed on this
site during this inspection, and no problems were noted.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Richard Wenzel at the Division of Minerals and Geology,
Denver Office, 1313 Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, Colorado 80203, phone number 303-866-4935.
Enforcement and Inspection Contact Address
NAME: Bill Clark
OPERATOR: Grand County
STREET: 467 E.
