Walther
&ecunve Dueaor
/.lichael B. Long
Division D~reclor
The Division received your letter dated June 3, 1999 regarding the BMP system n the south part
of the West Pit.
As you were notified in Mr. James Stevens' May 19, 1999 inspection report, the BMP pipe
which conveys stormwater runoff from the West pit to the Rito Seco drainage apparently
developed a leak through a cracked pipe or a faulty collar and was transporting contaminated
water from the West Pit to [he north bank of the Rito Seco. Mr. Stevens instructed you to locate
and eliminate the break, restore the BMP to its approved stormwater function anti restrict any
future flow thru the BMP to stormwater. As you stated, the BMP outfall line is currently
inundated due to the high water level in the West Pit backfill. BMRI inserted an Inflatable packer
into the pipe to eliminate flow from the pit and you have suggested that the BMF outfall line be
left disabled until such time as the evaporative system has been operated long enough to allow
the mine water level to drop below the outfall line. Once this occurs you will repair the line and
return the BMP to its designated use. Meanwhile, you will have a standby pipe and pump
available to remove stormwater from the West Pit if necessary.
Mr. Stevens is satisfied with this proposed interim corrective action so the Division does hereby
approve your proposed activity.
If you have any questions, please give me a call.
Sincerely,
`%1
~~Ze-r~-r~
James Dillie
Environmental Protection Specialist
cc: James Stevens, DMG
