I contacted MCC on August 25, 1997 and requested that they further investigate
the problem with the cabin waterline. They indicated that they were interested in conducting an
additional survey of the cabin in order to determine m-Y additional movement/settlirtg that may
have resulted irr the past year due to eubeidence. At that time they would also conduct a
r~ecomta>esence investigation of the waterline problem and attempt to determine a cause. I
carrtrrcted Mr. Mentz also on August 25, 1997 and requested that he allow MCC access to the
cabin in order to conduct their earvey and investigation. He indicated that he would provide them
access. He also indicated that he was planning to excavate the water line within the next several
days, starling adjacent to the cabin and working uphill, in order to discover the cause of the flow
restriction. He indicated that he would be willing to allow MCC to conduct the water line
excavation instead. I indicated that MCC was irrtereeted in conducting a survey end other
investigatory techrriques at this time and that I believed it was appmpriate for them to have an
opportrarity to do so. I also requested that MCC be allowed to be present at the time that Mautz or
his represelrtetive excavated the waterline. Mr. Mautz agreed. Upon following np with MCC on
this issue, on August 29, 1997 MCC indicated that they had been in crnnmunicatioa with Mautz
so that they could observe the water litre excavation operation and that dray were echednled to
conduct dreir earvey and other reconnaissance investigations drrting the week of September 1,
1997. At the time of the isertance of this inspection report DMG ie awaiting the resmlte of the
MCC and Marrtz investigations into the cause of the water line flow restriction.
ARsrc leaving the site of the cabin, the group proceeded to the area of the Mustier Rock htads6de.
Commencing above ffie reclaimed drill pad immediately adjacent to the MnfHer Rock head scarp,
the party observed subsidence cracking and healing phenomena in the general area. The landslide
was observed fmm immediately above and to the west of the head scarp.
Next, the inspection proceeded to the landslide area which has disrupted acne of Mautz' access
roads and damaged a small livestock pond. The repair work required in order to make the access
road passable has been an issue of corrtention between Martz and MCC. MCC has been
regmested end is willing to conduct necessary repairs to the road birt has been unable to gain
access to the site during tune periods which are acceptable to Mauz
The Seal portion of the inspection involved inspection of the Muffler Rock landslide from below
and to the east of the slide. At this point several aerial photographs, and two in particular dated
1982 and 1983, which Mr. Martz had in his poeseseion, were examirrad in relationship to dre
current appearance of the landslide. The 1482 photograph showed numerous large coniferous
tr+eee growing on the face of the Muffler Rock elide, thereby indicating that the elide had been
2
