The site is
located 3 miles west and 6 miles north of Vona, Colorado along the South Fork of the
Republican River. Sand and gravel are basically removed from the active channel of the river
which is usually dry except for the occasional flow during heavy precipatation events.
The site was active during this inspection there was some material being stockpiled. The
identification sign was posted at the mine entrance and the affected area boundaries were
clearly marked. However, the disturbance appeared to be well within the approved affected
area. There was no topsoil salvaged at this site since mining is occurring in the active
channel and reclamation is basically to grade out any remaining material once mining is
completed a:id let future runoff events reshape the channel bottom with alluvial sand
deposits.
The main purpose of this inspection was to determine if the site is active. The annual
report indicated "no change" during the last year and if a site is inactive for more than 180
days, it should be placed in temporary cessation status. However, since this site is
obviously active, the operator should be accurately reporting the amount of acres disturbed
and reclaimed each year along with an appropriate map illustrating those activities.
This concluded the inspection.
I &_ E~~t Address cc: Jim Stevens
^ CE
NAME Wa lt Isenbart ^ BL
OPERATOR Ki t Carson County ^ FS
STREET P, O.
