(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-iaaa-tna
INSPECTION DATE: NnvPmhPr 14, 2nnt
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: y~~
This routine inspection was conducted to comply with the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board's di2c[ive that every mine
in [he state be inspected once every four years. This inspector was accompanied by: Gary Feiner, Plan[ Manager; Greg Knapp,
Senior Environmental Engineer; and Randy ,Mine Superintendent.
The mining operation extracts Pierre Shale from a pit on the west side of State Highway 93 in northern Jefferson County,
crushes and conveys the shale east of the highway to a processing facility. This facility heats the shale to approximately ?200
degrees F in a rotary kiln to create lightweight aggregate for the construction industry. The shale is mined with an excavator
and transported by truck to aratio-feeder that reduces the shale to 6" size and feeds it onto a conveyor that feeds the plant. The
plant and conveyor are planned and permitted to remain after the mine is exhausted.
A sign was observed at the entrance to the operation, and the boundaries appeared to be clearly marked.
The pit slopes an_ mined to approximately 1: I slope that appears stable. iVo adverse jointing or faulting was observed which
would adversely affect [he stability of the slopes. All water that falls on affected land is retained in the pit and no evidence of
erosion off site was noted. Haul roads are well graded and well maintained to prevent dust generation.
An infestation of Diffuse Knapweed was noted in a previous inspection report. This infestation is being controlled by periodic
aerial spraying program in conjunction with the nearby Rocky Flats facility.
The fuel storage facility appears to be properly constructed and operated.
The mine appears [o be well engineered and operated and is proceeding in an orderly fashion.
The bond for [he operation has been re-calculated and will be addressed in a separate letter.
~2~~~ ~~
~ o00 ~ (0 70 oa~8 ~f I I ~ aas8
I & E Contact Address cc: B~9r.
