Colowyo C-1981-019
1 August 2007
Pg 2/7 ~
Roads (cont.): -The roads in the southern expanses of the West Pit for access to the
Bower and Kiewit projects was well maintained and appeared to be stable at the
time of the inspection. These roads run along the west edge of the West Pit and up to
the top of the section 16 Pit on the west side. No erosional problems were noted on
these roads at the time of the inspection.
-The road to the 101 dragline working in the East Pit area was stable and well
maintained at the time of the inspection. No erosional problems were noted on this
road.
Hydrologic Balance: -The wash bay pond (not a NPDES discharge point) contained
water approximately four feet below the top of the embankment and was not
discharging. This is a total containment pond and discharge into the Work Area Pond
triggers BTEX testing (in addition to regular NPDES testing). The operator and the
contractors use this pond for water for their water trucks. The pond embankment was
well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time of the inspection. No
erosional problems were noted on the pond embankment at the time of the
inspection.
-The work area pond (NPDES 002A) contained water approximately three feet below
the top of the discharge pipe and was not discharging at the time of the inspection.
The pond embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time
of the inspection. No erosional problems were noted on the embankment at the
time of the inspection.
-The Gossard Pond (NPDES 003A) contained water approximately five feet below the
riser pipe and was not discharging at the time of the inspection. The pond
embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time of the
inspection. No erosional problems noted on the embankment at the time of the
inspection. The emergency spillway is a 12" culvert. There is sediment in the pond
that will need to be cleaned out this summer to maintain proper pond capacity.
Tony Tennyson indicated that the pond would be cleaned sometime this summer.
- All of the roadside ditches appeared to be clean and functioning as designed at
the time of the inspections. No erosional problems, sediment build-up or blow-outs
were noted at the time of the inspection.
-The West Pit Pond (NPDES 008A) was dry at the time of the inspection. There was a
small pool of water in the presettling sump at the inlet of the pond. The pond
embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time of the
inspection. No erosional problems noted on the embankment at the time of the
inspection. The emergency spillway is an open, trapezoidal riprapped channel. The
spillway was stable and well maintained at the time of the inspection. The flexible
pipe that was placed on the edge of the West Pit Pond and West Pit Fill has been
removed.
- The Rail Loop Pond (NPDES OO6A) was inaccessible both days of the inspection due
to trains being loaded.
