MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M1982-112
INSPECTION DATE: 3/23/2006
(Page 2)
OBSERVATIONS
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: CMR. HHP
This was a normal monitoring inspection of the Miller Gravel Pit conducted by Chris Rowe and Harry
Posey of the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology. Rick Hunt the Representative and Owner
of the pit was present during the inspection. The pit is located 16 miles northwest of Kiowa, and
approximately 100 yards east of Running Creek.
The Miller Gravel pit is a very active 112c gravel operation. The mine is being operated under a
lease to Schmidt Construction Company. The permitted area is 56.13 acres, with the majority of that
land already mined or currently being mined. The Representative estimated mining could be
completed within a year. The mining has progressed to the affected area boundary on the north and
west side, and is substantially compete on the east side. The current active area is along the south
end of the pit, with a 20-30 foot highwall currently being excavated. Along the northeast portion of
pit, reclamation activities have progressed; the slopes have been graded to 3:1 or less slope.
Revegetation is beginning to take hold in the area. it is currently fenced in and cattle are utilizing the
area. Topsoil and overburden stockpiles occupy much of the Northwest section of the mined area.
The topsoil is generally vegetated and is in good shape. The overburden piles are either exposed or
have weeds growing on them. There is also a process water pond in the northwest corner that
apparently has an augmentation plan in place. An area along the eastern wall was recently graded
to a 3:1or less slope and had been top-soiled, revegetation was to proceed soon. The main part of
the pit floor contains large stockpiles of sand and gravel and a processing facility. While the pit is
open along a portion of the west side, it appeared that the majority of the stormwater runoff stayed on
site. The mine site appeared to be generally run in accordance with the Operation Plan, the Act, and
the Minerals Rules and Regulations.
The current financial warranty is set at $28,900, and given the extent of the reclamation to date this
warranty is considered adequate for the remainder of the reclamation activities.
Enforcement and Inspection Contact Address
NAME:
OPERATOR:
STREET:
CITY/STATE/ZIP:
cc:
Rick Hunt
43160 CR 17-21
Elizabeth.
