(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-2006-032
INSPECTION DATE: 5-23-06
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS GRM
This inspection was conducted as part of the normal program established by the Colorado Division of Minerals and
Geology for new applications. The Bellgardt Pit is an existing pit that due to the passing of the original permit
holder is being re-permitted rather than SO'd. In addition to the original permit area, an additional 16.5 acres is
being added. Dean Hovey, representative from Western Gravel, accompanied the inspector.
The mine identification sign and affected area boundary markers are in place and in compliance with Rule 3.1.12.
The current sign will have to be modified upon approval of this permit to reflect the change in permit number.
Stakes and fence lines delineate the new area under consideration as well as the original permit area.
No significant infestations of noxious or other problematic weeds were noted on site during this inspection.
However, some thistle was noted along the northern edge of the current disturbance area and white top was noted
along the edge of the wetlands area. The operator has an active weed control plan with spraying season coming up
quickly. Mr. Hovey is going to make sure that the thistle is addressed at that time. The white top is outside the
cun•ent permit and in the wetlands, which is not to be disturbed. In the future, monitoring for this species will be
important.
A visual comparison ofthe Pre-mining Map of actual conditions and man made structures was done. There appears
to be no issues or man made structures missing from the maps. The new area is undisturbed juniper /pinion slopes
with a wetlands area in the valley floor. Plans are to protect the wetlands with sedimentation control ditches and a
designed crossing up gradient.
The inspector noted several stockpiles ofprocessed materials on the current pit floor. Highwalls generally aze 10 to
15 feet in height and approximately 1501inear feet in length. Finished slopes along the northeastern comer ofthe pit
appear to be close to 2:1. The inspector advises the operator to double-check the slopes to verify they meet the
approved slope angle. Topsoil / overburden is being stockpiled to the north for redistribution when reclamation of
current excavation areas is completed.
No erosion, sedimentation or off-site damage is noted. At this time there appears to be no issues with maps and on-
site conditions. Issues related to the application will be handled through the normal review process.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Russ Means at the Division of Minerals and Geology,
Grand Junction Field Office, 101 South 3`d Street, Room 301, Grand Junction, Colorado 81501, phone no. 970-241-
1117.
I & E Contact Address cc:
^ CE
NAME: Dean Hovev ^ BL
OPERATOR: Westem Gravel ^ FS
STREET: 3001 Townsend ^ HW
CITY/STATE/ZIP: Montrose, CO 81401 ^ HMWMD (CH)
^ WQCD (CH)
^ OTHER
