(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1980-248
INSPECTION DATE 07/14/2006 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS DEG
OBSERVATIONS
This routine monitoring inspection of Permit Number M-1980-248 (Lyons Pit No.2) was conducted by Deb E. G6nima of the
DMG. Moffat County representative Marvin Moore was present during this inspection. The pit is located approximately 6'/s
miles east of Craig, CO on Highway 394, and currently consists of approximately 40.91 acres where approximately 10 acres
are being actively mined and/or are currently disturbed, approximately 20 (eastern) acres have not yet been disturbed, and
approximately 10 acres have been reclaimed, but are not yet ready for release.
Mine entrance signs and permit boundary markers are all in place, and topsoil stockpiles are all well-marked. All activities and
completed work at the time of inspection appeared to follow the guidelines and regulations set forth by the state and the mining
and reclamation plans for the pit, and no problems are noted for this site. The site is stable and no disturbance was observed
outside of the approved permit boundaries. For future reference, this site is corcectly positioned in the DMG online GIS.
The large material stockpile is situated near the northeastern portion of the site (see photo 1). The center portion of the site is
active, reclamation has begun on the north and western portions of the site, and the eastern portion of the site has not been
disturbed yet. The current mined area is in the shape of a basin (see photo 4) and the reclaimed area(s) have been graded to
nearly flat slopes and seeded for agricultural post-mine use (see photos 1 and 3).
Well-marked topsoil stockpiles are located near the northern permit boundary and to the south of the active pit area (see photo
2). At the time of this inspection there was a wheel loader on site. The majority of the undisturbed area lies at the east and
southern portions of the site. The reclamation plan calls for the past-mine land use to be agricultural, and it was stipulated that
Moffat County will not be released from reclamation responsibility until after a successful crop harvest. This past growing
season was not productive enough to be considered successful. Therefore, at least one additional growing season must pass
before the reclaimed portion of the site may be released.
A storm water runoff control program was implemented a few years back and seems to have been successful in its use of
diversion structures, sediment traps, and small ponding areas along the eastern portion of the site. There appears to be no
offsite erosion, and no long-term (greater than 72 hours) water retention was observed.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Deb E.
