III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
999
April 3, 1997
Mr. James C. Stevens
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sharman St., F'oan 215
Denver, CO 80203
Re: Southway Pit (Ft. Garland), Permit No. M-81-153
Inspection Report
Dear Mr. Stevens:
RECEIVEC
APR 0 71997
Dlvlsion of Mmerais a Geology
We received a copy of your report of inspection of the Southway Pit
at Ft. Garland, Costilla County, CO conducted on March 13, 1997.
We have taken note of your findings.
We will post a new ID sign for the pit very shortly. A sign had
been posted previously as rerniired and canpany personnel had not
noticed that it was no longer in place.
Although we admit that there is limited activity as far as crushing
operations in the Southway Pit, your r~camiendation for tacq~orary
cessation does not seem viable. We have agreanents in place for the
stockpiles with the Colorado Department of Transportation and
cow~ty operations. Material fran these stockpiles is rem>ved fran
the pit according to their needs. Our agreerents specify the flexi-
bility of being able to use the pit at will. Telrporary cessation
would be violated t~irough this type of use.
ReCla;m;nq the pit .is not a workable solution at this point because
of the existing stockpiles, keeping them separate, and acccessing
the material. Additionally, we prefer the cleared area to set up
a crushing plant arui for stockpiling. The walls of the pit also
act as a site barrier'for those who are offended by this activity.
Specification aggregate production is a major part of our business.
Because this is a n~r'al area, there is not a continuous danand for
material. Therefo:ce, it is necessary for us to r~nain flexible to
those parties for whim we crush.
117 WHITE PINE DRIVE
ALAMOSA, COLORADO 81101 Off.
