• (Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-94-081
INSPECTION DATE 10-23-97
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS SSS
This was a complete inspection of the Peat Mine located approximately 12 miles east of
Alamoea. The operation is approved to excavate 10 acres at a time in a 90 acre permit area.
Reclamation of the first 10 acres must take place before mining of the second 10 acres
begins.
The operator had dozed up piles of peat for ease of loading into trucks. Several piles were
noted on site. Two excavation areas were noted, where sand and gravel are being removed.
The excavations are approximately 12-15 feet deep and near to groundwater level at the
bottom.
Total acreage disturbed appears to be under the 10 acre maximum with only approximately 4
acres of 12-15 ft. deep pit area. The west pit has elopes of 3:1 or leas and has not been
worked for some time. Weeds are beginning to invade that pit area, which is an improvement
over the bare dirt of the undisturbed site. Beneficial revegetation of this site, after
mining, may be possible due to removal of the salty crust which caps the peat material, and
the proximity of the reclaimed surface to the groundwater table. The east pit has vertical
walls that the operator was in the process of back sloping. At one location, the highwall
was situated at the edge of the permit area. The operator was backfilling this area from the
bottom upwards to prevent slope failure which could create off-site disturbance. A county
road ie located at the top of this elope which created both safety and stability concerns.
The operator is cautioned not to allow future excavation to occur this close to either a
county road or the permit boundary.
Signs and boundary markers were in place and in compliance.
No noxious weeds were observed.
NAME Ron Barrier
OPERATOR Mr. Peat
STREET P.
