Colowyo C-1981-019
16 October 2007
Pg 6/6
General Mine Plan Compliance (cont.): -The operator has a contractor (Krulej
working in the West Taylor drainage, around the location of the West Taylor fill. Krule
is removing and burning the trees in advance of the topsoil stripping operations. They
are using a CAT D6 dozer to knock over the trees and they are loading them into
incinerators with a CAT 321 excavator with a claw attachment and a logging skidster.
The incinerators are the size of a dumpster and they force air onto the burning trees,
providing oxygen for a complete burn. There is very little smoke once the process
begins. Prior to lighting the incinerators, the contractor is removing the topsoil and
digging a narrow trench for the ashes. Currently Krule has four incinerators on site
and is on schedule. There were no problems noted with the Krule operation at the
time of the inspection. **See pictures of this area at the end of this report**
- Kiewit has been making a large bench for a water tank (for watering the roads,
ultimately) and aready-line for the haul trucks, since the other one is north of the East
and West Pits. The earthwork has been completed and the area appears to be
stable and well compacted. They have the water tank in place and much of the
structures for the ready line. There were no problems noted with the Kiewit operation
at the time of the inspection. **See pictures of this area at the end of this report**
- The mining at the Colowyo Mine appears to be progressing as discussed and
approved in the PAP.
Excess Spoil: -The reclaimed portions of the West Pit spoil pile were well vegetated
and appeared to be stable at the time of the inspection. Runoff from this portion of
the pile goes into the West Pit pond. No erosional problems were noted of the pile at
the time of the inspection. The upper portion of the pile is truck-dumped spoil. This
part of the pile appeared to be stable at the time of the inspection. The reclamation
plan calls for the top 75 feet of this pile to be hauled to the West Pit to achieve AOC.
-The Streeter fill was appeared to be stable at the time of the inspection. No
erosional problems were noted on the fill. This pile has gone through a Phase II bond
release. The fill was well vegetated at the time of the inspection.
-The Section 16 fill was appeared to be stable at the time of the inspection. No
erosional problems were noted on the fill. This pile has gone through a Phase tl bond
release. The fill was well vegetated at the time of the inspection.
Overall, the operations and reclamation at the Colowyo Mine are being conducted
in accordance with the approved plans contained within the PAP. The operation is
doing a good job ensuring compliance with all of the Rules.
