(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1981-057
INSPECTION DATE 11/21/03
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS ESC
This was an inspection of the Sprague- Red Lyons Quarry conducted by Erica Crosby of the
Division of Minerals and Geology. Neil Sprague of Arkins Park Stone Corp. was present
during the inspection.
The Sprague- Red Lyons Quarry is located 2 miles north of Lyons in Boulder County, Colorado.
A mining and reclamation permit was issued on June 10, 1981. A conversion application (CN-
O1) was approved on June 30, 1999 for a permit area of 59.7 acres, where up to 35.8 acres can
be affected. No mining was taking place during the inspection.
The quarry is divided into three separate areas, quarry #1, #2, and #3. Each quarry size is
limited to 5 acres, for a total of 15 acres. However the total disturbed area is limited to
35.8 acres. The Division holds a bond in the amount of $26,500.00, which is adequate at this
time.
The Division surveyed the disturbance on site using the Trimble GeoExplorer CE GPS Unit. The
area was compared to the 1999 GPS survey. The rocks pushed down the drainage were not
surveyed due to the steep slopes and hazardous terrain. The disturbed area for all three
quarries is 11.14-acres. This number could be higher if the material previously pushed over
the road were taken into consideration. In 1999 the noted disturbance was 8.1 acres.
Quarries #1 and #2 are jointed for a total of 8.47-acres. Quarry #3 is 2.67-acres in size.
See attached maps for clarification. The operator is within the limits established in the
conversion application.
The operator stated that material will be pushed down into the drainage to create a road to
access rock on the west end of the draw. The road has been slightly widened to account for a
staging area and a MSHA required road berm. During the conversion application (CN-O1), the
operator specifically stated that no material will be pushed into the drainage. At this time
the operator does not have the necessary approvals to push any additional rock into the
unnamed drainage. If the operator intends to push rock into the drainage, then the permit
will need to be revised to reflect this change. Without approval from the Division, such
activity is considered a violation of the permit and the Construction Material Rules and
Regulations.
I & B Contact Address
NAME Judy Sprague
OPERATOR Arkins Park Stone
STREET 520 S CR 31
CITY/STATE/ZIP Berthoud, CO 80513
^ CE
^ BL
^ FS
^ HW
^ HMWMD (CH)
^ SE
^ WQCD (CH)
Cc: Carl Mount; DMG (via electronic transmission)
