cap had a small hole in it, as did the steel well casing near ground
1 evel .
PRS-3 This site was not positively identified. However, the elecl:rical
conductivity of the stream was measured at 300 umhos/cm. Flow was low and
the water was running clear.
LA-264 This site was labeled (sign on ground next to well). The screw cap on
the steel casing has a small hole in the top. The water level in this
well was measured at 59.15 feet from the top of the steel casing. Table
3.1-1 in the 2000 Annual Hydrology Report indicates the well has a total
depth of 295 feet. Attempts were made to probe the bottom of the well
using both the water level meter and the bailer. Neither device would
pass the 90-foot mark, possibly indicating some kind of obstruction or an
improper depth for this well. Water bailed from the well had a strong
odor of rotten eggs(HzS). Electrical conductivity was measured at 1300
umhoslcm.
SF-2 This ground water well site is located on the ridge south and east of the
mine site. The well was accessed by way of Cherry Canyon. 1leasurement of
the water level was not possible due to equipment limitations. The well
was capped but not marked.
Rule 4.05.13(1)(d)(i) requires that wells be operated and maintained to obtain
accurate data. The operator should ensure that all wells are tappet'. and/or
repaired to prevent surface water from entering the well casing. All wells should
be clearly marked or labeled in a semi-permanent fashion for accurate
identification.
Revegetation
Reclaimed areas are showing signs of new growth due to warming temperatures. Soil
moisture seemed adequate but additional moisture would be beneficial. Biennial
weed rosettes were noted in the pond 2 reclaimed area. These and other weeds on
the site should be controlled as necessary using herbicide or mechanical methods
prior to setting seeds this season. The area of reclamation above the reclaimed
portal is not showing any sign of new vegetation. This site should be checked for
methane contamination in the soil.
Soil Methane Monitoring
The area of methane contamination in the soil east of the mine permit area was
observed. Grasses are beginning to sprout on the two reclaimed gas well pads.
Some weeds were also noted on bare areas to the north of Highway 12. Photos were
taken of the area from the surrounding ridges. The Third North vent shaft was
blowing mine air strongly to the atmosphere on this day.
4
