The site is located in northern Jefferson County, alongside State
Highway 93 about 6 miles south of Boulder, and adjacent to Rocky Flats. Mr. Brown noted that Lafarge
considers this site and the adjacent site, permitted under M-1994-045, as one facility. We were unable to
inspect M-1994-045 on this day due to scheduling constraints.
The pit is situated on one of the Rocky Flat outflows just prior to where it begins to drop off to the east.
Consequently, the east side of the site is slightly to prominently dissected as the surface water flows drop off of
the flats from a west to east direction. According to annual reports filed with DRMS, no mining has occurred on
the site since 2001, although Mr. Brown says that Lafarge has sold material out of this permitted area in 2007
and plans to resume mining at the site at an undetermined future date, so filing for TC is not required at this
time. Rock crushing machinery and a scale house remain on site, as well as small water impoundments totaling
less than 10 acres in areal extent.
In accordance with a request filed by Lafarge on March 31, 2006, soil is being hauled into the permit area from
an outside location and placed on the northern part of the permit area. This activity was ongoing during the
inspection and appeared to be confined to the perimeter of the area in the request. The area covered at the
time looked to be about 5 acres. As the material appeared to be of good quality as fill/topsoil material, no
recalculation of the bond is warranted if this material remains on site as the seedbed.
No mining disturbance has occurred on the northeastern segment of the permit area, a segment that includes
a wind farm facility operated by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Additionally, no mining has
occurred on the southernmost tip of the permit area, although an unimproved road traverses the area for
access to Hall-Irwin's construction materials operation permitted under M-1987-1 13.
About one-fourth of the permitted area appeared to have been regraded and reseeded. Areas with
reclamation and established vegetation exhibited apparent healthy vegetation and good erosional stability.
Areas that had not been reclaimed were suffering from weed infestation consisting of Diffuse Knapweed. This
has been cited as a problem below.
Mr. Waldron of DRMS staff expressed concern over the apparent lack of positive drainage from some of the
regraded and/or reclaimed areas, specifically from the old slurry containment area.
I & E Contact Address
NAME: Steven T.
