..-~-~
INSPECTION REPORT - PAGE 2
FILE N0. 76-20
DATE: June 11, 1985
OBSERVATIONS OF IMPORTANCE:
1. Chuck Gordon was the person contacted on site.
2. Erosion North & East of the site (upstream from permitted area) was
observed.
3. No mining was occurring at the time of the inspection.
4. The gravel pit 1977 excavation was washed out by the Animas River,
exhibiting a nearly vertical bank.
5. High waters have breached the area of excavation in the "dredge hole".
The "dredge hole" is now the main channel of the Animas River.
6. The Animas River channel appears to have been worked recently. Material
was dozed on the East bank. Annuals on old workings indicate that this was
done before this growing season.
7. Erosion in 1977 pond threatens portions of the plant/stockpiles area.
8. No significant downstream erosion was observed.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Mining in the Animas River constitutes possible violations of permit
provisions.
2. Damage caused by high water breaching the older 1977 pond and "dredge
hale" will require correction by amendment.
3. Please respond to the above concerns no later than July 1, 1985. Based
upon your comments, the Division will determine whether or not enforcement
actions are appropriate, and whether or not any proposed corrective action is
acceptable.
/yt
Doc.
