Colowyo Mine: pg. 2
Over the course of the past two years the permittee has devised, and worked with Mr. Walker to
approve as a minor revision to the permit, various runoff control strategies to reduce overland
Flow velocities, trap sediment, and minimize erosion along designated drainage ways receiving
runoff from the haulroad. These drain ways were rip rapped where necessary, had protected inlets
and outlets, and contained dugout sediment traps where necessary (which were designed for
routine sediment removal) to reduce erosion and trap sediment. All the azeas I inspected were
stable and had recently been maintained. The permittee has done a good job of minimizing the
effects of haulroad runoff and no off site impacts were documented during the inspection. Haul-
roads in the active pit areas were being watered for dust suppression during the inspection.
We also evaluated topsoil removal, storage, and replacement on the mine. We inspected most of
the mine topsoil stockpiles and all the stockpiles appeared to be on stable areas and well
vegetated. Both topsoil removal and replacement are contemporaneous, and the permittee is
avoiding topsoil removal where the soil is still too wet. It appeazed from color differentiation and
general observations that the permittee is removing all topsoil and other suitable soil material as
required. The reclamation redisturbance necessary for the West Pit fill expansion has minimized
redisturbance and salvaged all soil materials. Topsoil removal operations were observed during
the inspection. The permittee is conducting topsoil removal, storage, and redistribution as
required, and as approved in their permit.
Please address any questions concerning this report to Henry Austin at haustin@osmre.eov or to
(303) 844-1400 x1466.
